Dr. Mayer received his bachelor’s degree from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. He attended medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he received Dean’s Letters of Commendation and the Cyrenius Chapin Award recognizing academic excellence during the preclinical and clinical years of training. He completed his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., where he published and presented research on the relationship between small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and irritable bowel syndrome. He earned a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he became Chief Fellow. He received the Janssen Gastroenterology/Hepatology Scholar Award and presented research at national gastrointestinal meetings regarding the epidemiology of gastric cancer.
Dr. Mayer is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, and has been selected by the American Board of Internal Medicine to be a reviewer for the gastroenterology board exam. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the San Diego County Gastroenterology Society. He has been listed by the Consumers Research Council of America as one of “America’s Top Gastroenterologists.”
Dr. Mayer provides consultative and endoscopic services covering the spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology, with a particular interest in irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and gastroesophageal reflux.
His priority is to provide exceptional gastrointestinal services to the San Diego community.
